Real Stories

When determination meets opportunity.

“Terrance didn’t just walk through our doors looking for a job. He was searching for a new beginning.”

A father determined to build a better life for his young son, Terrance H. enrolled in our Construction Training Program — and stood out from day one. His eagerness to learn, his consistency, and his commitment to growth made a lasting impression. Whether mastering new technical concepts or getting hands-on experience in the field, he approached every challenge with humility, focus, and drive.

By graduation, Terrance had developed strong construction skills — and discovered a new sense of purpose and pride. That dedication led to a position with M. Cannon Roofing Company, and today he is a proud member of the Chicago Roofers Union, providing for his family and setting an example for others in the community.

His story has come full circle: Terrance is now using his skills to help build the roof of the Leadership & Economic Opportunity Center — rising right here in Woodlawn.

More wins from this year: over 100 neighbors hired on the spot at our UPS hiring event, a Construction Cohort tour of IBEW Local 130, and a pop-up build challenge at the Chicago Furniture Bank.
